Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo after this little bird fell out of its nest. My Nana called me down the garden as she was the one who found it so we put it in an old nest, slowly dripped water into its beak as it was ventilating like crazy until it calmed down!

Time

I remember it so well, it was just after we had had a BBQ for lunch on a nice Spring day with the family over. I think it was the first BBQ of the season.

Lighting

The sun had dipped behind a cloud so the lightning turned quite grey but still had a really interesting warmth to it which you can see resonating in the birds fur.

Equipment

Incredibly this photo is a couple of years old and I took it on my first DSLR, a Canon 350D. I used the kit 18-55mm lens. Really remarkable what you can do with a simple kit, shows that it's not all about the equipment you have but more how well you use it.

Inspiration

Seeing this bird relax as we comforted and re-hydrated it was really amazing, and I felt I had to document it.

Editing

Just a simple edit in Photoshop. I increased the contrast and detail and other simple edits so not to detract from the incredible raw photo.

In my camera bag

Back when this photo was taken, just my Canon EOS 350D with it's kit lens and my other Canon 80-200mm zoom lens. Nowadays my Canon EOS 650D lives connected to my Tamron 18-270mm which is a really great all round lens. I always make sure to pack my nifty 50mm Canon lens and my Yongnuo YN560-II speedlite along with triggers. If i'm going somewhere for a while I either pack my 3 spare batteries or my battery grip.

Feedback

Patience for the right opportunity to come about, yet being ready at all times. Never let your camera be too far away, you never know when a fantastic opportunity may arise.
