Behind The Lens

Location

This picture was taken at my home in Lower Towamensing Township in NE Pa.

Time

It was early in the evening after the sun had set.

Lighting

The light was dimming rapidly so I quickly made my rounds taking pictures of blooming flowers on our property. I particularly like this time of day for shooting.

Equipment

My camera is a Nikon D3200. The lens I was using was a 55.00 to 200.0 mm f/4.0 - 5.6. Focal length of 105 mm, 1/500 sec @ f/4.5, ISO 100.

Inspiration

Taking photos of nature; flowers, trees, leaves in the Fall and animals (when I can catch them standing still) are my favorite subjects. In this photo I saw the center of the flower with it's rich purple color bleeding outward trying to consume the yellow petals. I never looked at things like this until I got into photography which was only about deven years ago. A short time to become any good, for me anyway. I now look at flowers and trees and fields of corn and mountains and clouds in the sky differently now and I owe it all to photography.

Editing

I did a little post processing as I remember. Mainly I blurred out a red flower pot that was iin the shot. You can still see it about left center of the shot. It just didn't belong to what I wanted to achieve in the photo.

In my camera bag

Well, there'smy camera of course, a kit lens and my 55.00 - 200.00 mm lens, a couple filters (an ND2-ND400 fader adjustable neutral density, a polarizer filter and a UV protection filter). Then there's extra batteries, SD cards and lens cleaning supplies and a remote shutter release. In the car I have my tripod and extra bag for the rest of my stuff that can't fit in my camera bag. In there is mostly macro equiptment. I use a three piece lens extension for macros, a lot less expensive than buying new lenses.

Feedback

They say you should "Stop and smell the roses". What I do is stop and look at the roses and any other flower that I come across. And I mean really look at it. Try to find something interesting that you never noticed before. and then shoot it. It might be the color or the way the light hits it or even an insect crawling on a petal looking for a meal. And for amatures like myself, get to know your camera and don't get discouraged if you don't take that award winning picture right away. I read somewhere that you have to take 100 shots before you get that 1 good one.
