Behind The Lens

Location

I shot this photo at the Fire Island Lighthouse just east of Robert Moses State Park on Fire Island, Long island, NY.

Time

I came home from work that day (Wednesday) about 6:00 PM and my wife and daughter were at a soccer game and my son was out with his friends. The weather was beautiful, warm with low humidity and lots of wispy clouds so instead of cooking dinner, I grabbed my camera bag and headed out with the intent of taking some sunset shots at the lighthouse. The park is only about 5 minutes from my house and the walk to the lighthouse is about a mile. I took a bunch of shots over the Great South Bay as the sun set and also turned 180 degrees to get the lighthouse. This was my last shot as I was heading back to my car. A long exposure shot during the blue hour.

Lighting

I used a high f stop to get the star effects on the lights during the blue hour and even captured some stars. The long exposure helped illuminate the structure and surrounding area.

Equipment

Shot with a Canon 70D, Canon 10-18 mm wide angle lens, 30 sec, f/16, ISO 400 on a tripod.

Inspiration

My niece had been nagging me for a good shot of the lighthouse. The weather and timing cooperated. She got her shot.

Editing

I used to shoot a lot of HDR but am now shooting raw and post processioning in Lightroom . Minor adjustments to exposure, color, clarity, sharpening and lens correction. Just starting to use Lightroom and am learning more each day. Dipping my feet in Photoshop too.

In my camera bag

I recently upgraded my Canon T1i to a Canon 70D, 10-18mm and 18-135mm lens, and a Manfrotto tripod.

Feedback

I'm still learning and my interest lies in landscape, night and astro photography. I'm reading a lot and using the internet to educate myself trying to make each shot better. On the photos I like, I look at the EXIF data to see how is was shot so I can learn how to capture that type of image. Also look around where you live, some great places are definitely there waiting for you to photograph.
