Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken next to the boat basin at Robert Moses State Park on Fire Island, Long Island, NY.

Time

I took this image about 20 or 30 minutes after the sun set on July 12, 2015. I had actually set up and shot from this location the previous week to capture this long exposure image but did not have the great color in the sky you see here.

Lighting

Lighting is natural and the afterglow from the sunset brought out some nice orange and red in the clouds above the horizon with the clear skies above being enhanced with the blue hour beginning. The long exposure and light streaks from the one car passing by provide the lighting in the foreground.

Equipment

Canon 70D on a Promaster tripod, Canon, EF-S10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM lens at 10 mm, ƒ/9, 20s, ISO 100, Lightroom processing.

Inspiration

I love taking long exposure photos and the effects that can be created with moving lights. I remember shooting this way on film over 30 years ago and having to wait for the photos to come back from the developer to see the results. Today with digital, the results are instantaneous. I had actually shot this same photo a week before but the sky and sunset didn't cooperate. I did capture some fireworks going off in the distance and my car light streak was a little longer creating a nice "S" curve along the road, but the sky and sunset colors in this photo just made it better accenting and playing off the colors of the light streaks from the car.

Editing

Adjustments to image in Lightroom, including exposure, highlights, clarity, contrast and sharpening.

In my camera bag

A Canon 70D, Canon 10-18mm wide angle and canon 18-55mm and 18-135mm kit lenses. Promaster tripod and remote shutter release. I just picked up a 10 stop ND filter and am experimenting with long exposure images under brighter skies.

Feedback

Photography is a hobby that I have taken more seriously over the last 2 years. I am strive to learn something new every week and to make the next image better than the last. This location is only 10 minutes from my home so I go here and surrounding areas often to photograph. This long exposure image creates an effect that your eye doesn't normally see and is unique to long exposure photography.
