We had just moved into our new house in Mayer, AZ, I saw the birdhouse just off the porch, I knew there had to be babies as mom was bopping in and out with bugs and such. I went out everyday at different times with my camera and waited. Finally I saw them, there were three! This one had it's head poke out screaming for mom to come with more food. This photo was taken just as it was giving up and crying, so disheartened! Mom came back and fed the babies right after this photo. The next week they left the nest.Time
This photo was taken on 8/10/2015 at about 9 a.m.Lighting
Happily there is a big broad leaf tree over the birdhouse so I was able to get soft natural light that I only had to warm up slightly.Equipment
I shot this with a Canon T3i, iso was on auto and it shows at 125. My lens is a Canon zoom lens EF-S, 55 - 250 mm and was at 225 mm, f/8 @1/100 sec. I used the manual focus. I had to shoot quickly as I didn't know how long the baby was going to be out.Inspiration
Like I said I had been waiting for a week to take this photo! I hope I get more in the future. I love nature and want to photograph in its natural state. This year I was able to get a photo of Mom taking food in for the babies, sadly I didn't get any great photos of the babies this year. I really was concentrating on the baby quail this year. I am lucky to live in an area where there are so many different species of birds.Editing
All the editing done on this photo was in Lightroom. I cropped the photo to emphasize the baby. I warmed it up a bit, took the highlights and whites to a -26 and the shadows +29, blacks +7, clarity +10, vibrancy +7, and saturation to +17. I wanted to highlight the baby's beak and mouth since he thought he was starving! I also liked that it brought up the reds in the birdhouse. I did not change the exposure. In my camera bag
I have a lot in my bag! I am still learning so I do seem to run around with more than I need! Although it has come in handy to have the extra items! I have my Canon T3i, my 18 - 55mm lens, 55 - 250 lens. I have my gray card, speed lights, a cold shoe, and pocket wizards. I keep a tripod and a light stand in the car at all time because you just never know! I also have my battery charger and lots of extra batteries for my pocket wizards and speed lights.Feedback
If you know the object you are waiting to photograph, such as my birdhouse, take images of it at different times of the day so that you have the settings you will need right away when the right photo comes along. I have a pocket notebook I carry with me so that when I take a shot I can write down my settings and the time of day. That way if I am in that area again at the same time of day I have a beginning point for my photos. Any time you are taking photos of nature you have to be patient! You can force nature to your time schedule.
