Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken south of Taos, New Mexico, along the High Road.

Time

Early evening

Lighting

A lightly cloudy, colorful sunset was behind me.

Equipment

Canon T4i with Tamron 18-270mm

Inspiration

We were in New Mexico in late August 2015 for a quick vacation, and had just left Taos, heading back to Espanola. I had stopped to photograph a colorful sunset, and when I turned around to go to the car for another camera, I spotted this scene, with the nearly full moon rising over the Sangre de Cristo mountains. The lighter area to the left are the lights from the Taos area and the rusty color on the mountains is from the sunset that is now behind me.

Editing

I exposed more for the sage and high desert in the foreground so the sky was a little blown out. Some minor processing to the RAW file in Lightroom managed to bring it back.

In my camera bag

My bag varies, but it's usually a Canon DSLR body, currently using a 70D mostly, but also a 50D and a T4i. The Canon 10-18mm, and a Tamron 18-270 are almost always there, but there could be a fast, wide-angle there sometimes as well. There's a good chance there's a film camera (either 35mm or medium format) close by.

Feedback

Shoot, shoot, and shoot. Shoot what you know and love, but step away from that and shoot something new and unfamiliar. Make mistakes, and learn from them. Shoot the same scene from multiple angles, exposures, distances, really work the scene. And especially at sunrises and sunsets, the best shot may not be in front of you...always look behind you!!
