Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Wegerzyn Gardens in Dayton, Ohio. This young lady was one of my first models starting out when she was about 12 and this happened to be her Senior Session. She is into retro styles and I thought the clothing suited her style quite well and the specific look I was going for in this photo.

Time

The photo was taken in the late afternoon in the height of summer. We were hoping to do it even later in the day, or early evening, but weather was coming in so we had to shoot it a little sooner than I had planned. It was starting to get a little bit overcast though so I thought the natural lighting still worked quite well.

Lighting

I didn't do anything special for the lighting, but we did adjust the hat so the light was coming through it and was very soft around her face. In the color version of this photo, you can see it more than here. She has a soft golden glow that was very flattering.

Equipment

The shot was taken hand held using my Nikon D80. No filters or flash.

Inspiration

Amber is a girl who wanted a very retro senior session. I had seen some photos online of a very glam retro shoot of a female movie star from many years ago. When I showed it to Amber, she said she would like to try for a similar look. We both thought the photo came out very well and that it suited her style. It has become a favorite on my photography page and other places it has been posted.

Editing

I turned the color photo to a black and white image first. Then I used a PicMonkey finish on it called Urbane that I think looks kind of cool on black and white photos. It gives them a aged look without using Sepia, which I tend to think looks overdone sometimes in photos. This look fit more the style of old glam we were going for and I think it really served the purpose.

In my camera bag

I carry my camera body of course, two lenses, filters, extra batteries, small reflector and flash bender, flash gun, polarizer, and a few small cleaning products. I try to keep it light when I am out without an assistant to help me. When you are trudging through woods and all over urban areas, things tend to get quite heavy.

Feedback

Before this girl even told me she wanted to do a totally retro session, I had it in my mind that this was what I would like to see her wearing. When she came to me with the idea, I was beyond thrilled to see we were on the same page. So I feel that the clothing and location really need to fit your subject and I personally meet with each client a couple times before the session to try to make things go as smoothly as possible during the session. I would also suggest looking online at ideas of styles you admire, but then definitely put your own spin and flair on it. Also, try to get lighting similar to the photos you like. Not always easy, but I like a challenge.
