Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo from the observation deck on the Jungfraujoch in Switzerland.

Time

It was somewhere around 3 in the afternoon.

Lighting

The day started off horrible, completely covered in clouds and rain. While many would recommend overcast conditions fo photography, I personally prefer the sharp contrasts of bright sunlight. Once you get out of the underground train at the Joch, you then have to take the lift from deep within the mountain up to the observation deck. The view was stunning, as you're above the majority of clouds. Clear blue skies with the occasional shred of clouds. Wonderful!

Equipment

Canon EOS 70D, Canon EF-S18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS and a hefty dose of natural sunlight.

Inspiration

I wanted to capture the contrast between the jagged lines of the mountain, and the smooth white lines of the snow. The clouds provided a third texture effect.

Editing

Yes, the usual. I take every shot in colours, so it was converted to black&white. Tightened the image a bit by cropping, increased the contrast slightly, played with the highlights&shadows, and added some Sharpness and Clarity in Lightroom.

In my camera bag

By default there's my Canon70D with a Sigma Contemporary 18-300mm F3.5-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM attached for quick grabbing. (Love the big range on it!) I also never go anywhere without my all-time favourite lens, the Canon EF100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM. Depending on what I'm shooting I also bring a Canon EF70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM and a 10-24mm Tamron. Oh, and I've got a UV filter for each(Mostly to protect the lens in sandy/windy conditions), 6 SDcards ranging from 16GB to 128GB, two spare batteries and a lens cloth.

Feedback

Look for the different textures. Don't be afraid to wait an hour or two for the right cloud conditions. Sunlight isn't always your enemy!
