"There is a darkness inside all of us, though mine is more dangerous than most. Still, we all have it, that part of our soul that is irreparably damaged by the very trials and tribulations of life. We are what we are because of it, or perhaps in spite of it. Some use it as a shield to hide behind, others as an excuse to do unconscionable things. But, truly, the darkness is simply a piece of the whole, neither good or evil unless you make it so. It took a witch, a war, and a voodoo queen to teach me that." -Jenna Maclaine, Bound By Sin

Location
I took this photo in a beautiful double row of mature red pines, which is part of the Hiawatha Highlands Conservation area in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario.Time
We had scouted this spot to use for another project in the mid afternoon. When we were nearing the finish, it was approaching dusk, and the way the trees were being silhouetted by the pink light of the setting sun was quite magical. I asked my model to remove her shoes, step onto the cold, wet autumn forest floor and this moment came to lifeLighting
I wanted the mood to be shadowy and full of melancholic, in keeping with the emotive essence of the portrait. I hoped to maintain muted colors, and a soft dream-like quality, so shot wide open and used natural light.Equipment
This was a handheld shot with a Pentax K-X, using a tamron adaptall 28-70mm lens, at it's widest aperture of f3.5.Inspiration
Autumn in the Algoma region is strikingly attractive, and I wanted to convey with the changing of the season the sense of sadness and despair that comes when it seems as though everything is dying, and things are about to come to their end. My model, Ollie Rose, perfectly interpreted the emotion that I was trying to impart onto the viewer.Editing
For post processing, I used Raw Therapee to bring up exposure levels, manipulate white balance color tone for drama, and open up shadows in the raw file. I then used Gimp 2.8 to add texture, intensify colors, create the darkened blood effect on the model's night gown, and did composite layering to add the bats around her and up into the trees. I finished to shot by multiplying the edges to create a vignette type framing. In my camera bag
I typically carry two off camera flashes, a flash trigger and remote, extra batteries, rain cover, neutral density filter, a 2x teleconverter, a nifty fifty, a 70-200, and spare memory cards and a couple of clamps for just in case use. Oh, and lens cleaner and a magic cloth.Feedback
I think the key to achieving this type of shot is just to get out and shoot. Don't be afraid to make mistakes, don't get caught up in second guessing your ideas. Not everything will work, but the more you shoot, the more you have a chance of making magic happen and learning what will work and what wont work. Be creative!
