Behind The Lens

Location

Lecom Park, spring training home of the Pittsburgh Pirates, in Bradenton, Florida.

Time

Middle-to-late afternoon.

Lighting

It was approaching the golden hour so the natural light was cooperating.

Equipment

Canon T2i, 18–135 mm lens. Hand held.

Inspiration

This is Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Chris Archer in his rookie season. Fans can look down into the bullpen areas in this park, so I knew I could get an unusual angle. I framed him and waited. He just happened to look up and see me. I took the shot.

Editing

Not a lot. I lightened some of the shadows and cropped in a bit.

In my camera bag

Canon T2i and T6i bodies; 14-55mm and 18-135 are my main lenses. I also carry a Canon Speedlite; Marantz digital recorder, EV 635a microphone and cable; headphones, battery chargers, notebooks, etc.

Feedback

Patience. Waiting for the right expression, or body movement. Knowing the game is huge. Knowing where a play is likely to be and knowing when it will likely happen can increase your chance of looking at the right place at the right time.
