Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken outside in front of a black building. My model stood in front of a sidewall. Over his head was a speedlight with a softbox. It was a test picture, but it came out pretty good.

Time

I took this picture in the middle of the day, I think it was 3 pm here in Germany. It was a cloudy day, but I still used my Speed light. Why? Because I have tried to get a more dramatic look out of this picture.

Lighting

I tried to get a dramatic and mysterious looking picture, so I used just one light setup without a reflector. So I just had the ambient light and my speedlight. I tried to keep both of them in balance. I think it worked out.

Equipment

I used a Canon 600D with a Canon 50mm 1.8 and a Boom Arm light stand with a Yongnuo 560 ii on the flashlight was a SMDV 60cm Softbox. Thats was my setup.

Inspiration

One day before our shoot I was looking at Pinterest for some inspiration and I was looking for dark portraits. So on the next day I had many different pictures and my own idea to take this picture.

Editing

Yes I do. The best way to show you, is to see the before and after. Like you can see I stamp the reflection on my softbox away. Then I retouched his skin. After that I darkened the picture, put this blue/green color for an cinematic, dramatic and mysterious look. After this I D&B his clothes and corrected his beard. The last three steps were just darkening the highlights on his head. Make a stamp visible layer and sharpen the picture. i think it took me 30 minutes to retouch this picture.

In my camera bag

My Canon 600D with a 50mm 1.8 prime, a Tamron 24-70 2.8 zoom lens, my speedlight the Yongnuo YN-568EX II as my flash trigger I use the Yongnuo YN-622C YN and last but not least my bussines cards, a cleaning set for my lenses, memory cards and batteries for my camera and my speedlight. And then it depends on the shoot I take a reflector, a softbox or a tripod/light stand with me.

Feedback

If you don´t have a flash than try to balance your shutter speed & iso to get a dark look in camera. I would open the aperture up as much as possible to get a good shallow depth of field. Then if you have taken the perfect picture. You can make it outstanding in post-processing. If you have a flash: Without HSS, you have to balance your flash power and your aperture to get a good result. With HSS: Open your aperture as much as possible activate your HSS mode and balance your shutter speed and your flash power until you get the right result. The more you do on location the less you have to do in post-processing.
