Behind The Lens
Location
This was taken at a small zoo in Alamogordo, New Mexico. She's a rescue and is unable to be released in the wild due to an injured wing.Time
This was taken in the afternoon on a beautiful fall day. It wasn't too hot or too cold out.Lighting
She was sitting on her ledge where it was dark behind her but the light was shining just right on her. She just sat there as I snapped some pictures and was very photogenic.Equipment
I used my 300mm kit lens on my Canon Rebel T3i. No flash or tripod but patience was a key factor for this shot. She was sleeping most of the time but heard a noise and that's when I was lucky to get this shot.Inspiration
I absolutely love owls, especially barn owls. She was just sitting there enjoying the day and the light was just right. Once I heard her story, I wanted to take her photo thinking this might be the only time I see a barn owl.Editing
Since it was dark behind her, I was able to darken it to make a black background. I enhanced the clarity, and adjusted the exposure but that's really it.In my camera bag
Since taking this photo, I have been able to get better equipment. My bag continues to get heavy but it's worth it. Right now, along with my Canon Rebel, I have a Sony A7 in my back along with a macro 90mm lens and a standard kit lens. For my Canon, I have a 50mm, 75-300mm, and 18-55mm. Along with all of that, I have some filters and my tripod.Feedback
Patience is key. I didn't have my tripod so it was hard to keep the camera steady so I kept getting blurry shots but I was able to lean on something to help me stay still.
