Location
I took this photo at Penguin, Tasmania on the hill overlooking Preservation Bay.Time
This scene was taken at about 6 p.m. in late April.Lighting
I was driving home from work and noticed the amazing cloud formations beginning to appear with the sun casting golden lights into the sky and over the fields. I just had to drive up onto to the hill where the sun sinks last over this little seaside town of Penguin.Equipment
I photographed this with my Sony a65 camera, sigma 10-20, 3.5 wide angle lens with a uv filter. I used the cattle ramp post as a makeshift tripod as the deeply furrowed, long grassy ground around the cattle ramp was far too unstable for my tripod and there was little space as the cattle ramp was close to the roadside.Inspiration
This is my favourite place to take photos as the sunsets are amazing and it is also the little seaside town where I frequent. I can't resist a beautiful sunset to photograph as I love nature photography and our little island of Tasmania. I am a country girl at heart so the idea of including the cattle ramp appealed to me immensely. I find this a wonderful spot to come and photograph to relax after a hard days work.Editing
I used adobe lightroom to post process this photo. I used basic editing techniques, decreasing shadow, increasing contrast, saturation, a slight decrease in highlights plus minor cropping, really nothing else was needed to achieve the result I wanted. In my camera bag
Sony a65 camera, Sigma 10-20 3.5, Tamron 150-600, Sony kit lenses - 18-55 and 55-250 and Minolta original 35-105, tripod Manfrotto bfree.Feedback
Always think about the lighting when taking your photos and try to shoot to achieve the best results to minimize glare, avoiding shooting directly into the sun. Don't miss an opportunity so keep your camera on hand and check out the times the sun usually sets in your chosen location so you are prepared, preferably, and have sufficient time to set up. Look out for points of interest for your composition such as the cattle grid and the sun in this photo and try to position them on the grid where they are most aesthetically appealing to the eye. I was keen to use my wide angle lens to its full advantage so I decided to include the leading line to the cattle ramp, so look for these opportunities when framing up your shot, take a few shots and pick the best ones! This was my personal favourite.
