This was taken at my best friend's house the first time I met her new baby. The dog and I were already good friends so she was so excited to introduce me to the new baby. She was very funny about the whole thing, she is a very big dog and she was so afraid of hurting the baby that she seemed to tiptoe around him but when she was invited she was so excited to sniff him and rub her face against him. The baby thought the whole thing was hilarious.Time
This shot was taken in the early afternoon, just after the baby woke from one of his naps and had a feed. He was wide awake and in the mood to be entertained so having two people and a dog doting over him was everything he could have wanted.Lighting
This shot was taken inside with the windows open to let the light in so the light was well diffused. I didn't have my full kit there so I simply pointed my flash at the ceiling and used it as a reflector to make sure there was enough light in the room to capture the moment.Equipment
As I was visiting my friend and her baby I did not take my whole kit, all I had with me was my standard walk around kit. My Canon 700D with my 24-105 lens and my flash.Inspiration
I was so impressed by the way the dog doted on the baby and at the same time was terrified that she might brake him, I thought I would capture the interaction between the sibling. I thought the picture really showed the character of the dog and it was refreshing to see such a big dog, of a breed that is usually referred to as dangerous, being so gently and cautious with her baby brother.Editing
The post processing on this shot is fairly evident. I found the bright colours that the baby was wearing were overpowering the shot as a whole so I tried it as a black and white but in plain black and white it felt as though the beautiful nature of the dog was being washed out. I found just bringing out a bit of the colour in her face evened out the shot and brought the focus back to the relationship between the two.In my camera bag
My whole big kit is too heavy for me to carry around with me all the time, I am only a little person, so I have a smaller walk around kit that I use for everyday explorations. It contains my Canon 700D with 24-105 lens, two flashes and remote triggers for my flashes. I find this kit gets me out of most situations but when I need a greater range of options I add my sigma 150-500 lens (great lens by the way), My Canon 100mm Macro, canon 50mm lens, my soft box and tripod.Feedback
When working with animals and/or children take lots of photos. Animal and Children are difficult to pose and even if you do get them in the position you want, their true personality doesn't come out until they are being themselves. So get down to their level, have lots of light and a fast shutter speed and don't stop taking pictures till they stop playing otherwise you might miss that perfect moment when they show the true beauty of their nature.
