Location
I took this in South Haven, Michigan which is a popular beach spot.Time
It was about noon when my niece and I finally arrived in South Haven. We decided to go out adventuring and she was acting as a model for me while I was taking some photos with my favorite camera.Lighting
The midday sun was good for this because it brought out the bright blue in the sky and the water. It illuminated the red of the lighthouse as the focal point very well.Equipment
I shoot using a Canon Rebel Xsi that I purchased six years ago. It just has the standard lens and I run it on full manual.Inspiration
My boyfriend loves lighthouses and this was the beginning of an on-going project to take photos of as many Michigan lighthouses as I can for him. I have transferred several onto canvases for the final presentation. Michigan has over 100 lighthouses that are still in good shape and even more that are not, and it is fun to be able to travel to those sights and find the history of the state along the way.Editing
I do very light post-processing. I just adjust the levels and the sharpness. I feel that as a photographer that is the only things I should be adjusting to keep the images as real looking as I can without over processing. In my camera bag
In my DSLR bag, there is the Canon Rebel Xsi, along with fog wipes to keep my lense from fogging, a little bottle of cleaning solution, Q-Tips, a microfiber cloth, a lense-pen (because I absolutely love them), a squeeze duster, a UV filter, a Star 6 filter, a Cross screen filter, the battery charger, and a few pens, markers, and pencils. I also carry one of the three tripods that I own with me at all times in case of night time shooting. In my SLR bag, my Canon Rebel 2000, a few rolls of 35mm film in black and white (my favorite brand is Ilford), pens, pencils, and a sharpie, a smaller cleaning kit, a lense-pen, a UV filter, and extra batteries.Feedback
Just go out and shoot. A lot of photographers wait until the perfect lighting is there but I prefer to shoot on the fly. I can spend hours at a sight shooting and can capture different tones of lighting in those hours. I don't like to just wait until the lighting is perfect, I like to shoot the progress of what I want. But always be prepared for anything. I always have two jackets with me, a tripod, extra film, extra batteries, gloves, boots, plenty of water bottles, a few light snacks like granola bars, a blanket and a hazard kit just in case something goes wrong.
