Location
Winter Island is a small park on a peninsula near Salem, Massachusetts. Among other uses the park is a former USCG air station. There is a small lighthouse there as seen in the picture. I always try to include a vessel when I take a light house picture. As with most of the New England coast line the shore line is rugged with a large boulders scattered in clumps around the beachTime
This was taken in late afternoon. I had been walking around Salem and then drove to the park.Lighting
I found the sun reflecting off the white paint of the light intriguing. It created a bright spot as the water remained slightly dull. The sun also brought out the features in the rocks and the sail on the boat.Equipment
The image was taken with a Nikon D810 and 18 - 85mm lens hand held using natural light.Inspiration
The contrasting colors caught my eye as well as the need to include a vessel. I liked the angle of the sail boat as it tacked as well.Editing
I process all my images in Lightroom. In my camera bag
I always carry a large amount of equipment with me in my truck. I carry the D810 and one or two lenses in a small "day bag" as I move about a particular scene.Feedback
You can find many lighthouses along the New England coast. Lighthouses were put in places to help ships avoid rocks. You can find many great locations and scenes if you take a tour of New England lighthouses. On top of that are old buildings galore. New England can be a photographer's paradise.
