American Anhinga
The Snakebird, or Water Turkey, frecuently assumes a spread-wing pose when ashore, as do certain other species. The posture may help some birds to regulate body temperature or to balance themselves. Ahingas are believed to hold out their wings to dry-a neces- sity because of the porous nature of their feathers, which absorb more water than the oiler plumage of ducks and grebes. An Ahinga spends much time swimming with just its snakelike head and neck above water. It eats everything from frogs eggs and insects to fish and small alligators.
Anhinga anhinga. Length: About 3 ft. What to look for: neck long, sinuous; pointed bill; wings streaked white; female browner, with whitish throat. Habitat: slow-moving fresh or brackish water; occasionally in protected saltwater areas.
