Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was shot in at the end of august in the forest nearby by home in the Netherlands. I go there often with my little girl and our two dogs. On this walk, my daughter took her favorite toys with her. The light over here is incredible and i love to capture images here aswel.

Time

This image was taken around 7pm, the sun was already setting but it was still a bit harsh. I only shoot during sunset or 2 or 3 hours before sunset. I'm totally in love with the magic of light that sunset brings. And of course the amazing colors of the hour blue hour.

Lighting

Because of the harsh light, i placed my daughter under the trees. This exact place is my favorite because there's still a ray of sunlight falling through the trees. When shooting outdoors, i almost exclusively use backlight because it makes my subject, in this case my daughter and her favorite toys, pop out. And i always use the widest aperture my lens can handle. The distance between her and the background is very important because i love a blurry background. The further away my subject is from the background, the more blurry the background is. And the same goes for the foreground.

Equipment

This was shot with a Canon 5D mkIII and the 85L at F/1.2. No other equipment was used. Just my camera, lens and natural light.

Inspiration

My inspiration always comes from my own childhood. When i was little, i loved to read fairy tales and watch fantasy movies. I still do actually ;) I'm a big fan of Roald Dahl and Harry Potter. I believe that there is magic in childhood and I'm always in search of this magic. The main reason to bring her favorite toys was to capture them with her while she's still a little child. When she grows older and her toys aren't around anymore, she still can look back at this memory and treasure this particular moment. Her favorite toy is Mr. Monkey.

Editing

I didn't do much in post processing. I'm a ferm believer that an image has to be good in camera. The bokeh, White balance, which i set in camera using Kelvin, and composite are done in camera. No cropping or adding blur in post. The sharpness is coming from the amazing lens, the 85L. One of my favorite lenses ever! I used some curves to add some contrast and then flipped the image and masked back the left side because i wanted symmetry in the image. The editing from start to finish took 5 minutes.

In my camera bag

That depends on my vision and what i have in mind before i go out to shoot. I always know in my mind, before i take a picture, what I want with the picture and according to that i pack my gear. In this case i only brought my Canon 5D mk III and Canon 85L prime because i knew i wanted that creamy bokeh. I don't want to be distracted by lens choices while i'm shooting so that's why i mainly use one camera and one lens, depending on what my vision is. Sometimes I pack my Fuji XT-1 with the 56 1.2 or the 90mm 2.0, and sometimes my Canon and the 85L, the 70-200L, one of my Lensbabies or one of my vintage lenses that i inhered from my father. However, my favorite lens all time is the Tilt-shift 45mm 2.8. If i only could use one lens ever, that would definitely be the one! I love using manually focussing because it gives me total control to create what i have in mind.

Feedback

When shooting with backlight with harsh light or sunlight, go and try to find some trees or buildings to block the sunlight. Place your subject in the shadow and look for rays of light that fall from behind your subject. Create enough distance between the background and your subject to get a creamy bokeh and shoot always as wide open as possible. Use a prime lens. And most important, make sure you have everything set right in camera. It will save you a lot of time in post processing.
