Behind The Lens

Location

This was at my friends place in Charlene's backyard. She has a hammock in the very back and I was shooting Nick as a model in the yard and Jose came over to say HI and Nick picked her up and I photographed it. This is one of only 3 images.

Time

It was in the afternoon however there was a roof on top so all the light comes from behind me. (to the right side)

Lighting

I really like reflective lighting. Where the source is blocked and reflected back. It gives a softer image for sure instead of direct sun. No flash was used.

Equipment

I was using a Canon 70d with a couple of lenses that day. One of the best lenses I consistantly use is the Canon 100mm 2.0 lens (not the macro) and the other lens I use is the 24-70 2.8L as well.

Inspiration

Josie is such a Cutie and Nick LOVES dogs it was a natural smile when he picked her up off the ground and hugged her. I lifted my camera right away. It was not 'set up'.

Editing

As always, I do not put too much Photoshop into things. I clean things up - like dirt, specks etc but I never over process my images. Here I turned it into Black and white and then added some contrast. I also add Unsharp Mask (usually by 10%) as a final touch. Never use Unsharp Mask except as the final process.

In my camera bag

I shoot with a couple of bodies and lenses.. and it depends on what I am shooting. Canon 1dx, Canon 1NRS, 24-70 2.8L seems to be my standard lens.. but 85mm and 100mm are great for portraits. I use the 600 RT flash as well - usually under 2 stops so it just adds fill.

Feedback

Look for where you want the dark, not where you want the light. Your photos will turn out nicer that way.
