While wandering through Central Park with my sister, we were greeted with performance artists along the way. With spring in full bloom, we saw so many people out and about, enjoying the fresh weather. This one ballet dancer was putting on a public performance for a crowd of onlookers. She had such a serene look on her face and seemed to dance to her own melody.

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in front of Bethesda Fountain in Central Park, Manhattan, NY. I was an amateur photographer at the time who just wanted to explore Central Park, and came across this beautiful demonstration of choreography and movement.

Time

This photo was taken in the middle of the day, around 2 pm. This is usually one of the worst times of day to photograph because of the harsh light, but I lucked out with overcast skies and shadows cast from the surrounding architecture. It let me focus on the details of the ballerina rather than worrying about shadows and glaring light.

Lighting

Since it was the middle of the day, I thought I would have to worry about excess shadows and bright lighting. I got lucky with the cloud coverage and shade from the park's architecture. All I had to worry about were my settings, which honestly weren't very complicated.

Equipment

I used the Sony NEX-3N and a 16-50 mm kit lens to shoot this picture.

Inspiration

I took this photo while walking through Central Park with my sister about 4 years ago. We had been staying with my brother for 3 weeks while helping him get ready for his upcoming wedding. While he was at work, we decided to explore Central Park. One of the more popular areas is Bethesda Fountain. You've probably seen many movies and TV series filmed at this very spot. After walking through the Mall and Literary Park, you are lead immediately to a flight of stairs that take you through an underground tunnel. While admiring the art work and street performers, we noticed a crowd of people around Bethesda Fountain. At the center was this ballerina performing her choreography for the onlookers while her iPod played classical music in the background. I was just trying out my newest Sony Camera and wasn't expecting such a beautiful site. The way she stretched her limbs and displayed her sinewy musculature in front of this iconic New York landmark was like candy for an aspiring photographer.

Editing

Any type of photography needs some post-processing. Of course, this is the case with any travel photography which encompasses landscape, portraiture, and architecture just to name a few. However, I got lucky with only minimal post-processing to help lift the shadows and highlight the subject/foreground.

In my camera bag

Sony a7ii and a6000 bodies, my 55-200 mm lens, 30mm f1.8 prime lens, and 24.70 mm lens. (Hoping to add to that collection.) I'll carry a tripod if I know I'll be shooting low light areas. I also usually have my GoPro Hero 4 with me in case I'm going to be traversing difficult to reach areas or want the wide angle view.

Feedback

Crouch down, climb up on things, peer through cracks and holes and through bodies. Do anything it takes to get a different point of view. I'm constantly impressed by the different perspectives of commonly shot landmarks, and that's what I always aspire for when I'm out shooting my pictures.
