Behind The Lens

Location

I took this at my favorite fishing spot near my hometown in Southern Massachusetts. It's a small pond near me that draws a lot of visitors normally, but it was pretty quiet that day. But it's my fishing spot so that's all I can tell you!

Time

This was taken right after sundown. That's been one of my go-to times I think lately. About 15 minutes after sunset. The colors can change almost minute to minute. It can be fun.

Lighting

Lighting was natural. Nothing out of the ordinary.

Equipment

I had an old Samsung super-zoom bridge camera back then. It was all I had, but it did take decent shots really. I did have it mounted on a tripod, again, it was a cheap one but it did the job! OK, just barley.

Inspiration

I love sunsets that are unique. We've all seen the stunning orange - red masterpieces, but there was something so different about this one. The deep reds and purples are hard to come by for me. So when I saw the sun setting and all the different colors, I had to put away the fishing rod and start shooting.

Editing

The only post processing I did back then was bring the jpeg into picasa and boost some saturation and contrast. It was so simple then! The camera didn't take RAW photos so everything was minimal.

In my camera bag

I'm still on a budget! lol. So in my bag now I have my Sony A58, a Tamron 18-200 lens is my go-to. I can leave it right on the camera and it will do just about anything I want. I also have a Minolta 50mm prime lens, an expodisk for white balance, and a small variety of filters for the Tamron. I also carry a Canon SX610 point and shoot. Kind of just for fun. It takes great pics too, from a different perspective.

Feedback

To Capture a shot like this you don't have to get all the gear for all the money. You just need some basic skills, and a good camera that you are VERY familiar with. Think about composition early, and know your location. Always use the open part of the lake to get the most reflection bang for your buck. There was definitely something to say about the way the clouds were lending themselves to this shot. And I could see just before sunset that they were cooperating that night. I read here on viewbug once that you should always wait around after sunset because colors can change very quickly. It's so true!
