Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in my backyard. This is my best friend's dog, Bernadette. My friend had gone out of town for the weekend so I was dogsitting Bernadette. She has so much energy and was running all over the yard. This was one of the few moments were she was somewhat still.

Time

This photo was taken in the late afternoon during the summer. It wasn't a premeditated shot. Bernadette was just being cute so I grabbed my camera.

Lighting

This photos was made will all available light. At the time I was living in Austin, TX so it was quite hot but luckily the sun had hid behind some clouds so there was nice even light instead of the harsh light you can get during Texas afternoons.

Equipment

I shoot with Canon equipment. This photo was made with a 5d Mark III and a 70-200mm f/2.8 II lens. No other equipment was used.

Inspiration

This photo was simply inspired by Bernadette being amazingly cute. I love animals of all kinds and this one is so much fun and so goofy and so playful. Of all the images I took that afternoon this one was my favorite because I feel like it captures the spirit of Bernadette quite well.

Editing

There is no post processing done except for a small amount of toning. I shoot in RAW so the images that come out of the camera are a little flat. I usually drop the blacks to give a little definition to the photo and increase the contrast a little.

In my camera bag

For my above water work I have two Canon 5d Mark IIIs, two 580ex II speedlights, a 70-200mm f/2.8 II, a 24-70mm f/2.8, a 16-35mm f/2.8 II, and a 50mm f/1.4. The 70-200mm is definitely my favorite. I really like the compression telephoto lens give you and that lens is so amazingly sharp. For my underwater work I have an Olympus EPL-7 with a 14-42 lens and a PT-EP12 housing. I have a Subsee +10 macro diopter and a Nauticam wide angle wet lens.

Feedback

For a shot like this it is all about just being in the moment. Don't get too caught up in the technical side of things and just let the image come out of the relationship between you and your subject. I knew Bernadette would be moving around a lot so I gave myself a really fast shutter speed to freeze the action and then just played with her. For obvious reasons, working with animals can be difficult. I find that most animals are good at picking up on your attitude and if you treat them well they'll respond well to you.
