Location
The photo was taken at Werribee South Beach, southwest of Melbourne, Australia.Time
The image was taken just after sunset.Lighting
It was a spectacular sunset but I wanted to capture the darker pink tones so I waited until the sun was totally below the horizon. But I only had about 5 minutes of enough light to capture the shadows in the image also.Equipment
Nikon D800 body and my trusty 24-70mInspiration
I had just finished sunset a portrait session for a client on the beach. I spotted the boat and it's unusual position on the way to meet my clients and knew it would be the perfect subject to shoot after my client's session. The boat seemed mysterious and abandoned- it sparked the storyteller inside me.Editing
The image is processed in Lightroom. I have used a gradient filter in the sky and increased the contrast of the water to amplify the reflection. In my camera bag
Usually just my D800 and 24-70!Feedback
Always be prepared to capture this type of random subjects. I was very conscious of my composition and capturing the shadows from the seagulls. To add depth to the image, I was laying down at sea level - I found the lower perspective just made the image more appealing.
