Location
The old dodge in the photo was taken at a scrapyard in Pretoria, South Africa. The owner has a very large collection of vintage dodge vehicles amongst other things. The image was taken a late in the morning when the sun was already harsh, so I felt that this vehicle would be better served if it was placed into a new environment. I didn't quiet have the images I required in my own library, so I purchased some images to make a composite to place the vehicle in the environment I wish I had found it.Time
The dodge vehicle was found at the end of a early morning sunrise shoot at this old scrap. I had already explored the entire scrapyard except for this one corner where there were less vehicles, and thats where this incredible old dodge was sitting alone and in the grass. I wondered around it for a while but this angled profile was my favourite.Lighting
Because it was so late in the morning the light was already rather harsh, I made a large amount of post editing to soften the lighting in photoshop but luckily shooting in raw gave me a little more give to push the shadows up and make the lighting more even.Equipment
This was shot with a Canon 700 D with an 18mm - 55mm lens. I used no other equipment.Inspiration
I was looking into developing a new hobby and found a photography club which arranged organised meet ups at special locations. This was my first meet up with them and I was very excited to wonder around this scrapyard which was secure so I could focus on what I would find instead of worrying too much about my safety. I didn't know what I was looking for but this vehicle had so much character to it I just had to sit and take some time with it. It was never originally intended to be added to a composite but one day I just had this image in my head, and I must say I managed to pull the image right out of my head and compile it in Photoshop.Editing
I did a number on this image. The vehicle was deep etched form its environment and placed onto a background of merged images. One of the field, another for the mountains and then yet another for the sky. The house and trees are another 2 other images I had in my library. In my camera bag
I always have my wide angle lens with me, the Sigma 10 - 24mm, my Canon 40mm and my Canon 70 - 300mm. These seem to be my go to lenses as the 40mm lens has macro capabilities where my Canon 50mm doesn't.Feedback
Always keep a look out for something interesting even if the light may not be the best, if you can't get back to that location or if the moment will be lost rather take the shot then loose the moment. Collect photos of strange objects or an interesting sky and make a library if your interest is in compositing, you can always visit it later to make your composites of your own image. I've began my library and aim to have my composites made from 100% my own images, it takes a while but I think the results will be truly satisfying.
