Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at the Fairy Glen, Rosemarkie, Ross-Shire, Scotland. I'd only had my camera for a few months and was still trying different things to see what i could produce.

Time

The shot was taken around 7.30 in the evening. Although it was late May and daylight extends will into the late evening, the path to the waterfall is only about a mile from the car park and a nice leisurely stroll on a spring evening.

Lighting

The majority of the Fairy Glen is shaded most of the day from the woods on the high banks either site. At this time in the evening, the sun has dipped below the tree tops so its quite shaded with no bright sunlight penetrating the trees.

Equipment

The shot was taken on my entry level Canon 1200D with the kit 18-55 lens. A cheap tripod I picked up which is designed more for a personal camcorder, rather than supporting the weight of a DSLR.

Inspiration

Id been up the glen several times and knew the where the waterfall was. I was trying various settings and locations to get a feel for my camera, exploring the various settings and taking notes from other photographers that inspired me to look at the various settings and effects that could be produced.

Editing

At the time, I'd not discovered the joys of LightRoom, Photoshop etc and was just using the basic editing functions in photo manager on Windows 10.

In my camera bag

My bag is very basic, being on a very tight budget. I have by trusty Canon 1200D which to date, hasn't let me down. The Canon 18-55mm kit lens, Tamron 70-300 telephoto and a Yongnuo Nifty 50. A couple of timer release controllers and a handful of various ND and polarized filters.

Feedback

I've found that even with the most basic lenses, and camera, given the right location, you can still produce stunning images without breaking the bank. Review each image after you take it and make changes to your settings. For this particular image, It was one of around 50 different shots taken using different ISO, F/Stop and exposures. Once you get the image you like, take a note of what settings you used for future reference and always take a notebook with you to record any specific locations you like, times of day, weather conditions etc. and any hazards you need to cross to get there. Last thing you want is to get stuck on a hazard, particularly if your carrying a few £1000 worth of equipment with you.
