Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at my favorite place for sunsets, the shore of the Tramandaí Lagoon in Imbé beach, Brazil, on the summer of 2014.

Time

The golden hour of the sunset. Just about when the sun has gone down, below the horizon (about 8:15 pm, summer time in Brazil).

Lighting

I was trying to make my first HDR photograph, so I took 3 photos with a 2 stops on each side of the center. This gave a nice combination of light range to compose the final image.

Equipment

I used a Canon 60D DSLR camera, with a kit lens 18-135 mm, set on a MEfoto travel tripod. No flash.

Inspiration

This is my preferred place. It has a large expanse of water (the lagoon) and the sun sets behind a group of windmill generators. It is a quiet place and has a whole lot of different angles to use for photos.

Editing

In this particular photo I had to combine 3 photos. For the HDR, I used Luminance-HDR-x64 to create the base photo, then transfered it to Lightroom 5 for post-processing and just adjusted a little bit of contrast and exposure. The colors popped with the HDR.

In my camera bag

In my bag I carry my trusty Canon 60D, with a 18-135mm lens and a 24mm f/2.8 STM lens, plus some ND filters for long exposure shots. I also carry a Sony a350 DSLR with a 70-300mm lens for nature shots.

Feedback

Patience is the key. Sometimes you have to wait for the crowd to leave. Don't rush the shot, take your time to set up and wait, because after the sun goes the colors start to change and your are presented with a whole lot of possibilities for great pictures.
