Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at my preferred place, the pier by the Tramandaí lagoon in southern Brazil.

Time

This photo was taken about 10 minutes after the sun disappeared at the horizon. I kept waiting for the colors to change, and did a long exposure (15 seconds).

Lighting

This is all natural light. About 10 minutes after sunset. Earlier in the afternoon we had a storm passing, so the clouds give a little interest to the horizon. I did a long exposure (15 seconds) with ISO 200.

Equipment

This shot was taken with a Canon 60D and kit lens 18-135 mm (@18 mm), ISO 200, 15 sec. exposure. Had the camera on a tripod (MeFoto travel mate), no filters or any other equipment was used

Inspiration

I love to photograph the sunset, and this place is one of my favorites. This day we had a storm passing by in the afternoon, so I knew the sunset would be colorful. I got to the place well ahead of time to prepare the shot.

Editing

I did as little post processing as possible. As I photograph in RAW, I had to do a little adjustment on exposure, highlights, and contrast. No other adjustment was done to this photo. I used Adobe Lightroom for this.

In my camera bag

I normally have my trusty Canon 60D body and kit lens 18 - 135 mm, besides that, I will carry a prime 50 (f2.8), a Sigma 10 -20 mm f3.5, and a Canon 75-300 mm. Plus the tripod, and some ND filters (necessary sometimes).

Feedback

The best advice for similar shots is, in the first place, know the location and the weather pattern, second, have lots of patience do not take the first shot and go home wait for the light to change and see if anything different (colors, clouds, etc) appear. And be patient (again).
