Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at my university's photography studio, the image was the result of our final project being a series of images that all shared a common theme and represented differently lighting.

Time

This photograph was taken around noon, but being in a studio, you can lose track of what time of day or how much time has passed. I took a ton of pictures that day, trying to make sure that when it came time to edit, I wouldn't be left with one or two pictures that weren't blur or out of focus.

Lighting

I wanted this image to look like smoke does when its rises from the fire on a summer night. I wanted the background to be dark, and my model to look like she was fading into the background and look almost transparent like smoke.

Equipment

This shot was taken with a Nikon D50 on a tripod with a flash in a studio.

Inspiration

I was inspired by how smoke dances as it rises away from fire, and how that movement is so smooth and fluid just like a dancer's movement in a performance.

Editing

My post-process for the image was to edit in the smoke trails and I darkened the background more to give a bigger contrast between the background and my model.

In my camera bag

I always carry around my Nikon D50, it was my first SLR and it's an excellent beginner camera. I'm also not worried about it being dropped if I get a little too adventurous in my photography journeys, I also always carry a tripod in case I need a steady shot, and I carry my Neewer reflector with me for portraits to either soften the harsh outdoor lighting on my model or to bring more light to a models face without a flash.

Feedback

Always take a lot of photos, especially with moving subjects. I took about ten to twenty photographs of just this pose so I could make sure that nothing was out of focus or blurry when I came to editing my photographs. And don't be afraid to let your model give you their input, I always get a picture in my head on how I want an image to turn out, but when I was working with my model here, I let her try out different positions based on how she thought she could help me capture what I had in my mind.
