Location
This photo was taken in the Rocky Mountains of British Columbia, Canada. There is a wolf interpretative centre near Golden that offers a chance to get up close to some of their wolves. They drive you to a remote location that allows you to safely interact with the wolves and learn much about their behaviour.Time
This was taken in the mid-morning at the end of June. The day started out with a light rain but when we got on location, it surprisingly cleared to a be a beautiful day.Lighting
Once the rain cleared, we were blessed with a soft, even light that made the photo shoot so easy.Equipment
This was shot with a Canon 7D Mk II camera with an 18-135mm f3.5 lens. No other equipment was used.Inspiration
As we were following the wolves, one of the handlers took the wolves up a hill and around a bend where they couldn't see us. The other handler had bits of meat for them and had them run towards us to capture them running. It was so majestic watching these beautiful animals. The wolves there are still wild animals and not domesticated. They had been raised by the people as they were orphaned pups but still maintained much of their wild instincts and behaviours. We were educated ahead of time how to act to ensure our safety with the wolves.Editing
Very little post processing was done with this photo. I cropped a bit to give it the exact composition I imagined when I took the photo, and also increased the clarity and vibrance a bit to enhance the image. In my camera bag
Normally in my bag I carry my Canon 7D Mk II body, 18-135mm lens and 55-250mm lens. I also carry a Canon 430EX flash with diffuser and bendable reflector, and have recently added a set of neutral density filters. My tripod is usually nearby but I don't always carry it with me as I take many of my photos while hiking. My backpack is heavy enough with the regular equipment. Ideally I would like to add another camera body so that I'm not always changing lenses.Feedback
For capturing the wolves running toward you, be sure to have your focus set to quickly adjust with the changing distance, and also use a high speed continuous drive. It's surprising how different a fraction of a second can make in the image. I also thoroughly recommend avid photographers to check out the Northern Lights Wolf Centre for this chance to get safely up close to wolves. The owners are a great source of education on wolves and animal conservation in general. They are very passionate about their work and educate everyone on how to behave around the wolves and always ensure the safety of the visitors and wolves alike.
