I recently visited Kaikoura in New Zealand. Kaikoura is best known for its great seafood and abundance of marine life. My main objective of this visit was to photograph a sperm whale just starting its dive to feed. For the first couple of hours on the boat we were lucky to see lots of orca, but that in turn keeps the sperm whales away. Just before we were due to head back to land, we pulled up alongside the great whale. We watched it breathing and basking in the sun for a few minutes before it arched its back and headed for the surface showing the gigantic fins on the way down. It really was an amazing thing to witness, and I feel even luckier that we had the snow topped mountains in the background. For sure something that I'll never forget.
