Tank Insignia.
The white, five-pointed star painted on the tank´s turret and hull was used extensively on both American and Allied military vehicle during world War II as means of ground and aerialrecognition. The emblem is believed to have descendend from the white star and circular red and blue insignia first carried on U.S. Army airplanes in 1918.
American armored forces training in England and Northern Ireland in 1942 painted a plin white star and single stripe on the turrets of their tanks. Similar markings appeared with the forces fighting in the South Pacific. All least six different variations of this single star emblem appeared on U.S. vehicles during the war.
From 1943 on, the plain white star, sometimes surrounded by continuous broken circle, became the most common recognition symbol on American tanks and vehicles.
