Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Lyon, Confluences. This is a hot spot of the Biennale of contemporary art, and this building, called La Sucrière, hosts a big part of the exhibition. I shot the silos of the south end of the building, but I decided to turn the picture 90 degrees to achieve a more abstract look.

Time

This is a night time shot, as most of my photography. I like to shoot in the city lights or in the dark, to illustrate this fear of dark we seem to suffer from. City scapes at sunset, when the sky isn't yet black, and the lights start to glow, offer gorgeous sceneries, and industrial sites look like luna parks. Sometimes, in more quiet heavens, the Milky Way can still be seen, and this is a beautiful photographic subject too.

Lighting

Low light exposures require patience and some technical adjuvants, like a tripod and a light sensor, especially when you shoot analogic and all manual !

Equipment

This shot came out of a highly sensitive Polaroid 100, mounted on an old Mamiya Press settled on a tripod.

Inspiration

I have always liked this neighborhood of Lyon, which melts modern architecture with recycled industrial buildings. I wanted to use the stripes painted on the silos to create this impression of movement, like if it were tracks climbing down a concrete mount.

Editing

I scanned my Polaroid, and did very few contrast corrections. But I cropped it to end up with a square, as I like the dynamics of this format. I did in the end some texturing digital work - even though I usually don't texture my analogic shots, but in this case I wanted to try, and I thought it really added up to the final result.

In my camera bag

I usually wander around with a Canon 5DII, a few lenses - among them, a LensBaby -, a solid tripod, and led flashlights to create ambiant light (nothing really powerful needed, when you use long exposures), paint up details, or do lightpainting. As a side, I can decide to take a Holga medium format Lo-Fi camera, a Mamiya RB67, or my Mamiya Press with it's Pola back.

Feedback

Don't hesitate to get away from the standard point of view. We walk into the streets seeing the things the way they are designed to be seen, used, lived in. Shifting and tilting this common view brings up a new world, disconnected from these "practical handles".
