Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Union Mills Homestead in Westminster, Maryland.

Time

This was taken during golden hour in early October, right around 5pm. This whole senior portrait session had the dreamiest lighting!

Lighting

Truthfully, I am still somewhat of an amateur, and am still learning about lighting! I shoot only in natural light, and just happened to hit the jackpot on this particular day. It was an absolutely beautiful fall day, and the location we were at allowed the light to stream in, in just the right way! My suggestion is to just keep trying different lighting until you find what works for you. For me, typically I prefer my subjects to be back lit, rather than having the sun directly on them.

Equipment

This was shot with my Nikon D610, and a 50mm 1.8.

Inspiration

I was shooting a senior portrait session, and this was one of the last shots of the day. Randi was very much a fan of the fall colors, and the leaves here were the perfect color!

Editing

I did do some post processing, mostly with the eyes. Due to the direction of the lighting, her eyes were slightly shadowed in the SOOC image, so I brightened them to match the rest of her face. I then added a little sparkle to the irises. Randi is one of those lucky teenagers which completely gorgeous skin, so the post processing for her session was very easy!

In my camera bag

I have my Nikon d610 camera body, and a 50mm 1.8 as my primary lens. I also frequently rent a 24-70mm 2.8. (One day I will own it, but sadly not quite yet.)

Feedback

I am 5"2, so for me to achieve this shot, I brought along my trusty step ladder. Being up higher made it a lot easier for me to shoot directly down, and for me to get the shot I wanted without a lot of guess work. I also found that it was much more flattering for the model to have her head slightly turned, rather than straight on.
