An awesome capture with such a beautiful contrasting field of clover. Well done. I have one that sits in the ravine behind where I live but have not been able to see the hawk up close. Thank you for sharing such a wonderful photo. Well done and happy snapping.

Behind The Lens

Location

I took this image in my neighborhood in Bellevue, Nebraska. I first spotted the Hawk in my backyard sitting on a power line and went inside for my camera. I followed it as it went from spot to spot in the neighborhood. After about 45 minutes it landed in the grass and let me get pretty close. It was a beautiful bird and I enjoyed taking it's image. I am mostly self taught so I am always looking to learn and improve. For that reason I decided to go back to school to earn a Bachelor's Degree in Photography.

Time

I took this image in the late afternoon on an overcast day. It wasn't the most ideal time of day or natural lighting conditions to photograph in, however I couldn't let that stop me from taking pictures of this gorgeous hawk.

Lighting

The less than Ideal lighting due to time of day and weather caused me to up my ISO on my camera to ensure I could use a higher shutter speed for when the hawk took to flight.

Equipment

I used a Canon 70D with a 70-300mm lens with no other equipment.

Inspiration

The beauty and opportunity to photograph this hawk inspired me to capture images of it as it moved about my neighborhood. Every so often I see the hawk in my neighborhood. Whenever I do, it makes me glad that I took the opportunity to photograph it.

Editing

I didn't do much post-processing other than using Lightroom to make some minor exposure adjustments.

In my camera bag

I carry Canon 70D and Rebel t3i camera bodies along with 50mm, 17-85mm, 18-135mm, and a 70-300mm lenses. I also carry a light meter, speedlite, remote trigger, camera hoods, cleaning kit, several memory cards, ND, UV, and polarizing filters, and extra batteries. I also carry a notepad and pen to write down any notes or ideas I may have while I am out shooting. That is usually what I carry in my bag. As most of you know, that always changes depending on what you are planning on shooting.

Feedback

The best advice I can give while trying to capture images of wildlife is patience. If you need to move around to get a different angle or closer, remember to move slow as to not startle your subject. Also remember to set your shutter speed high enough that you don't get blurry images of your subject if it decides to move.
