Location
I took this photo on my back porch in southeastern Pennsylvania.Time
I took this photo probably mid-afternoon on a partly cloudy day in September. It was bright, but the clouds covered the sun, so no shadows.Lighting
This photo was shot au naturale, just the sun in the sky.Equipment
I just used the camera, which was actually a point and shoot Canon Powershot.Inspiration
Children and animals are my favorite models to photograph. I prefer candid, free moments to posed shots, and I almost always shoot in natural light. The summer I took that photo, a colony of stray cats had shown up on my block. Sally was one of probably thirty kittens born between May and September. At least fifteen of them were born on my back porch. As I said, I prefer natural candid moments. I like to capture people and animals as they are. Kittens, just like human babies, are unpredictable and just as entertaining. I must have taken thousands of photos that summer. This photo was one of many taken that particular day, but somehow it stood out from the others.Editing
The lighting was so awesome that day, nothing was needed, just some cropping. In my camera bag
My arsenal includes my Nikon D5100 with three lenses- the 18-55mm, 55-200mm, and a 50mm f1.8 prime lens. I also always carry a point and shoot option, since it can sometimes get places my DSLR can't.Feedback
I try to become part of my subjects world. Little humans or animals, I do not disturb them. I may set up the situation (for example, putting a out plate of milk or catnip for the kittens, or giving a toddler/child something to explore) but I do not direct my models. I try to blend in and let them do what they will. This isn't always easy. Sometimes it requires a lot of waiting for them to be comfortable with my presence. Also, it can require sitting/laying/standing in odd positions for long periods of time. Most of all it requires patience.
