Behind The Lens

Location

The photo "Holding the apple up" was taken shortly after we moved into our home called "Tranquillity" deep in the heart of southland New Zealand. It was the beginning of my photography journey. A life time passion for birds and the new country setting we found ourselves in provided an opportunity to photograph wild birds. When I down loaded the hundreds of images taken that day I wanted to share this one with the world. The little Wax-Eyes/Silver-Eyes are so tiny and delightful to observe and photograph. I felt this image told a story of nature sharing and caring for one another.

Time

Having spent most of the morning into the afternoon photographing these delightful little birds I finally manged to capture an image that told a story shortly after lunch.

Lighting

Being new to photography at the time the photograph was part of the learning process, patience and the result of taking hundreds of photos at a time.

Equipment

I had a Panasonic Lumix DMX FZ 35 at the time, with the camera in my hand I was leaning out the dining room window where apples had been placed for the birds. They flock here in their hundreds during the winter months for supplement feeding.

Inspiration

I have always been passionate about birds ever since I was a toddler. I supplement feed the wild birds around "Tranquillity" every winter taking the opportunity to photograph them up close and simply observe them and enjoy the wonderful bird song. Bird rescue and the rehabilitation of injured or sick birds brought to me is now a big part of my life. By sharing photos I hope that people are educated and appreciate all the beautiful birds we have in nature.

Editing

It was a while ago, not sure what post processing program I had at the time.

In my camera bag

My camera, tripod, batteries, and memory cards.

Feedback

With digital photography these days just keep taking as many photos as possible. Lots of patience with wild birds. Invest the hours and learn from the photos taken what works. Being self taught I have learned that you can not take too many photos...By investing the time you get better at taking photos and learn what works best.
