Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Castle Combe, Wiltshire, UK. It was our first visit to the UK and my daughter and then son-in-law took us on a trip for the Easter weekend to Somerset, Devon and Cornwall. I had so wanted to see Castle Combe as I had seen it in a couple of movies and thought it was very quaint looking and typical of Olde England. It was only a little way off the M4 which we were traveling on from Reading in Berkshire to Minehead in Somerset.

Time

It was late afternoon, not yet the golden hour on a partly cloudy, very cold afternoon in March 2012.

Lighting

Natural, available light only.

Equipment

I was using my old Canon EOS 300D, handheld with Canon EFS 18-55 mm lens that it came with. Nothing special.

Inspiration

It was just so picturesque and although the light was not yet golden it was so lovely, gentle and the air was crystal clear. This was one of many photos that I shot there in less than an hour.

Editing

Normal processing; ACR lights, darks, Curves tweak and then Photoshop CS3 (at the time), Levels, Saturation and Sharpening etc, with a little more contrast for the monochrome version and some tonal contrast with Nik.

In my camera bag

At that time I had only the Canon 300 D, The Canon EFS 18-55mm and a Tamron SP AF XR Di 28-75 mm and a light tripod. Now I always put in my Canon EOS 70D. the old 18-55mm lens, the Tamron 28-75 mm, Tamron SP 10-24 mm. If I have room I add my Canon EF 75-300mm lens and my Canon EF 50 mm lens. I always take my newer very light tripod because of its weight, ( have shoulder problems and cannot carry heavy weights). All my lenses have UV protection and polarisers. Plastic bags and elastics to cover camera and lenses when there is inclement weather.

Feedback

The UK's weather is very changeable, one minute the sun is shining and the next it is raining so I have some protection for the camera and lenses in my bag. I also take a cheap rain poncho to keep myself dry. Because I have shoulder and back problems and can't carry heavy things very far, I always get as close as possible in a vehicle and then walk the shortest possible distances if I am loaded down with photography equipment. I only attempt the longer distances if my husband is with me and can help me to carry, (he is not a photographer and doesn't have to carry anything of his own. I also have an old fishing jacket and for longer distances I have my camera and one lens around my neck and one on either side in my deep pockets. This image was shot after parking the car and taking just the camera and the two lenses with me in a small shoulder bag. We walked the entire village from end to end, probably not more than a kilometer.
