Behind The Lens

Location

I am a self taught photographer, have been serious about it for nearly twenty years. I shot this on holiday in Kwazulu Natal, South Africa at Thomsons Bay. It was my first attempt with a slow shutter speed and my then new neutral density filter.

Time

I shot it in the early evening, just after the sun sunk below the horizon. About 6.45pm.

Lighting

All natural lighting.

Equipment

My Canon EOS 70D, my basic zoom lens that came with my old Canon at a wide angle, 28mm. My very light tripod, pushed deep into the sand and the Neutral Density filter.

Inspiration

We had been at the beach earlier in the day and I thought it would be a great place to try slow shutter speed, smooth water shots. So we went down in the early evening and I started shooting. My husband is the figure standing on the cliff edge. When I realised it was him up there and the lovely water below, I shot a number of images, but this was the nicest.

Editing

Very basic Photoshop processing; adjusted contrast, enhanced some of the sky colours, sharpening.

In my camera bag

Canon 70D, 2 Tamron zooms, a wide angle 10-28mm and a 28-75mm, a Canon 50mm prime, and a Canon 75mm to 300mm zoom. The 18-55mm that I used for this shot needs to be repaired or replaced, lockdown has got in the way of that, I live in the country far away from the city. I usually have my polarising, UV filter and my neutral density with me, gorilla Joby and my tripod when light is not good. I take a lot of handheld, I am elderly but still have a very steady hand.

Feedback

Plan, know the time the sun will set, check the tides, this particular little beach is accessed through a natural hole and short tunnel in the rocks and then a rock path not too high above the crashing waves; it is cut off at high tide.
