Location
This was shot 'under the a45' road in Northampton, U.K. The road crosses the river nene and this contributes to some of the reflections on the back of the image.Time
Obviously, this was shot st night with a long exposure.Lighting
The total exposure was around 60 seconds. The sparks come from steel wool that is on fire and being spun in a whisk attached to a rope. The spinning took about 30 seconds, I then left the shot and the camera shutter remained open to pick up what little light there was.Equipment
Shot on my old canon 600d with the canon 10-22mm lens. As with any long exposure shot, this was taken on a tripod and in bulb mode.Inspiration
I was out with a friend shooting this type of steel wool shot as I've always loved the sparks and arcs.Editing
This shot was tweaked in little in Lightroom to get the balance right and slightly vignette the corners. In my camera bag
Nowadays, 7d mkii, 10-22mm, 50mm 1.4, 70-200 2.8, 100-400 4.5-5.6, 2x extender, tripod on the side and extra batteries, phone chargers, MacBook, paracetamol, ibuprofen and a couple of cans ok Diet Coke. I'm generally either taking landscapes, shots of the dogs or swimming photos for my local club.Feedback
Google! Steel wool photography is great fun, there are lots of how to guides and videos. Just be careful not to get burned or burn anything down! (I have a video on FB/G+ if interested, you should be able to find it) One last tip, 9v batteries are much better at lighting steel wool that a gas lighter.
