Location
This image was taken in downtown Detroit. I was shooting a couple for a themed engagement session. They both had real style, and flair. Shooting them was an absolute joy. We had so much fun, and I had a heck of a time narrowing down to a set of favorites.Time
We headed down at around 3:00, as I hoped to capture some slanted then evening light hitting buildings for an interesting background. We shot for a good 3 hours, with many outfit changes for Lisa, then enjoyed dinner in Greektown, which is a highlight in Detroit.Lighting
I shared above that I wanted slanted and evening light. It was a slightly overcast day, which I believe is perfect for outdoor work.Equipment
Shot with my Canon 50D and my everything lens: Canon 18-200mm IS. Great lens. I never take it off... along with my hood. For some shots I used a reflector. None were shot with a fill flash. Everything was done in natural light.Inspiration
Lisa herself. The girl just has it. She loves the camera, and the camera loves her. She is very brave, incredibly confident, and paddles her own fashion canoe. I love working with Lisa. She is a free spirit, and having the opportunity to capture that is such a gift. Thanks, Photo Fairies!Editing
I added a vintage feel using a set of actions by Florabella Vintage Actions, then did a matte effect using a curves layer in Photoshop. Lately I'm in a "matte phase". I just love that look. Particularly with black and white. In my camera bag
I carry so many lenses that I never use. I always have my flash, batteries, and hook my reflector to the strap on my bag. I use that reflector quite a bit. I find that, when used properly, it can create the coolest lighting out of nothing but a little sky.Feedback
Again, an above-mentioned. An overcast or at least partly cloudy sky is what you want. I do a ton of outdoor shooting with models and human subjects in general. When planning a shoot, I watch the weather. Look for days with clouds. The best, most even light is found under an overcast sky. I've also found that colors really pop when the rest of the world has a grey cast. Think of a pumpkin patch on a cloudy day!
