Location
I shot this at the Lindsey Austin Smith memorial rode, held each May in southern Missouri..Time
Approx. 9:00 pmLighting
The lighting was poor, it was shot after dark, in the rain under arena lights. I would normally have strobes or at least speedlights set up, but due to the weather I used the high ISO capability of the Nikon D4s and shot it with available light.Equipment
I shot this with a Nikon D4s and a 70-200 f/2.8 Nikon lens.Inspiration
A large part of my business is based in the rodeo/western market. Anywhere there is western action shots to be taken I will try to be there.Editing
Post processing was done in Lightroom and Photoshop cc. Mostly just a little noise reduction and sharpening, then I used Nik Color Efex to tone slightly. In my camera bag
I carry the Nikon D4s and Nikon D700 bodies, and always have the Nikon 24-70 f/2.8 and the 70-200 f/2.8 in my camera bag. I enjoy using off camera flash in my photography, so I have several Youngnuo 560 iii speedlights and all the necessary gear that goes with them.Feedback
This particular image was a bit of challenge due to the driving rain and low light. But, it was those conditions that helped make it more interesting. On days or nights like this, it's much easier to stay home where it's dry, but it's in the nasty conditions that good shots can be the norm so I try to stay out and shoot as long as I can.
