Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at one of my favorite places to go to, and that is Longwood Gardens located in Kennett Square, PA. It's more beautiful beyond words, and so big that I have been going for about 10 years and still haven't seen all that it has to offer!

Time

I took this right after a session I photographed, which I typically start those at 9am (when Longwood opens). So this was probably about 10:30am-11:30am in the morning. Which I always then end up questioning myself, if I went into business for myself, then why do I still do morning sessions if I am not a morning person!

Lighting

I took this picture in the conservatory, so I used what was available, which was natural light. No flashes, no reflectors or anything like that. Just the light that I had around me.

Equipment

I was using my Canon 5D mkII which has been my baby and my workhorse for a few years. For the lens, I took this back when I was going through my strictly prime phase, so this was with my 50mm 1.2L. No tripod (since they are not allowed in Longwood), or anything else.

Inspiration

Even though I am a portrait and wedding photographer, I always love photographing flowers. Hand down. If I could photograph just flowers for the rest of my life, I would die happy! After each session at Longwood Gardens when my clients leave, I take some time to walk around by myself, camera in hand, photographing the hundreds, if not thousands of different types of flowers there. With this particular shot though, I remember thinking to myself that I wanted to do something "dangerous" with the composition, which is why I ended up composing the image so that only half of the flower shows.

Editing

My typical workflow starts with importing my images to Lightroom, and from there I use the rating system to cull through the images. I then do a crop, simple color adjust, and boost contrast in Lightroom before editing in Photoshop. For this image, I used the clone brush took to even out some of the petals, and the burn brush to darken the background.

In my camera bag

Which bag are you talking about? I'm a bag lady! Ha! Okay, so seriously. I usually carry my Canon bodies, a 5D Mk II and a 6D, and as I said before, I used to be strictly a prime shooter. At the time this photo was taken I had the 50mm 1.2L, 35mm 1.4L, and the 100mm 2.8L macro. I now carry the 16-35mm 2.8L, 100mm 2.8L macro (I still love that thing!), and my new baby, the 70-200 4L.

Feedback

Whether it's capturing something similar or something completely different, remember that your image is unique to YOU. You are the only person who sees this image the way you do. You are the only person who will edit it the way you do. It's YOUR image.
