Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken on the sand and under Lagoon Pier in Port Melbourne, Australia during Summer.

Time

January 30th 2015, 7.15pm.

Lighting

There is nothing special about the lighting other than the natural magic of golden hour on a summer evening at the beach.

Equipment

Handheld shot with a Sony A57 and Tamron 18 - 270mm lens. Iso 100, 26mm, f/4.5 and 1/250sec.

Inspiration

Some photography friends were getting together in the evening to try some steel wool spinning shots on the beach, so I arrived a little early and had a wander camera in hand. I ventured up and down the pier as the sun was slowly setting, chatted to the fishermen, watched some playful dogs walking their humans and then watched the waves hitting the rocks and dispersing in different patterns each time.

Editing

Yes, edited in Lightroom and HDR effect added with Photomatix.

In my camera bag

I don't have many lenses, just my 2 kit lenses that came with the camera, which I don't use a lot since I purchased the Tamron lens which I find so convenient and gives great results. I did recently purchase a 50mm prime Sony lens, but need to get more acquainted with it. For that matter, I am sure that I am not using my A57 to it's full potential yet either, but it is all so much fun learning.

Feedback

The straight off the camera image is very average with little detail, and is probably both under and over exposed in areas. So I would just say that even if you are confronted with a less than appealing image because of exposure issues, if the composition and potential is there, it's always worth seeing what some post processing might be able to fix.
