Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on the west coast of Finland at the Gulf of Bothnia.

Time

It was late afternoon at 5 EM in early march when I went out to my favorite place at the sea and I spotted this ice cave.

Lighting

I wanted the sun to shine into the cave so I had to wait a good while to get the sun where I wanted. The sun's rays were reflected on the ice walls so the foreground did not become too dark, I also wanted to get backlight in the waves so it was important to take care when a wave broke against the rocks. A bonus was that a small island was right in front of the cave opening.

Equipment

This was shot on a Pentax K-5 with a Sigma 10-20mm lens set at 16mm.

Inspiration

I love to photograph in the winter and to photograph ice in different shapes and light conditions has become something of my specialty. When I saw the ice cave I immediately understood that it could be something extra so I crawled in and lay on my stomach and took pictures, it was cold and windy but I had a sleepingpad with me so it was not too bad.

Editing

I didn't need to do much, I just lit up the walls a little and added a some more sharpness.

In my camera bag

In my photo bag I always have my faithful Pentax K-5 and a Sigma 10-20mm lens, Pentax 28-105 mm lens and Pentax 100mm macro lens. Then the equipment varies, of course, depending on what I'm looking for.

Feedback

The winters out by the sea can be cold and the weather changes quickly, it is important to have warm clothes because when you are getting cold you also want to stop photographing. Feel free to have anti-slip protection on the shoes and a sleeping pad is also good to have.
