Behind The Lens

Location

This is one of my favorite fall photos. I took this a few years ago while hiking through Garden of the Gods in Southern Illinois. The views and foliage were breathtaking.

Time

This was taken on a chilly late afternoon in the fall and under the shade of the trees.

Lighting

Garden of the Gods is a national park approximately twenty away from where I live. It's very rural. The sun was just beginning to set when I took this and I took advantage of the chilly day and colorful leaves. I crouched down a bit and was able to capture the sun peeking out from one of the leaves. I love the contrast of yellow and blue in this photo, two of my favorite colors.

Equipment

I took this with my Sony Nex-5 DSLR body and an 18-55mm e-mount lens. No other equipment was used; I rarely use a tripod and flash.

Inspiration

What inspired me? Just look at the photo. Who wouldn't be inspired by the stunning views at this park and beautiful fall foliage, especially near sunset? Fall in Southern Illinois is an amazing thing.

Editing

I try not to do a lot of post-processing. With this photo, I did sharpen it a bit more, strengthen the saturation just slightly, and added some extra thin rays of light that carry to the bottom corner of the photograph.

In my camera bag

The first thing that is always packed is my Sony Nex-5 body. It's getting pretty outdated, but I haven't been able to invest in the new a7II yet though it's definitely at the top of my list. My lenses of choice for this day were my Sony 18-55, 18-200, and 16mm pancake lens with extra wide angle converter. The last things to be packed are spare batteries and memory cards.

Feedback

My favorite fall photos are always near sunset. The fall colors are usually just a couple weeks here. Try to go when they're the most vivid. If not, the colors can always be adjusted a bit in post-processing.
