Behind The Lens

Location

I took this picture in the fenced-in back yard one afternoon, while having some time off from college.

Time

The day was perfect and it was a nice afternoon when I invited my dog to come out and play. She loves to lay down in the grass and stare at the birds. Sometimes I even catch her talking to them, and they chirp back. This picture was taken around 2pm, when the sun made her hair glow, giving for that natural light to emphasize some magic moment, just as I had wanted.

Lighting

I desired for this image to have natural lighting. I had gotten the idea to take it at the angle I did while in the house on a rainy day, but waited until the lighting was just right on a nice afternoon.

Equipment

My camera is a Kodak Easyshare Z760 6.1 MP Digital Camera with 3xOptical Zoom. I didn't use a tripod nor did I find flash necessary. I placed my camera in the grass, pulling a bit out of my way, and told Penny to look at the camera.

Inspiration

My first picture of Penny was taken inside using flash. Upon seeing how well it turned out and how much everyone seemed to like it, I decided to let that be my inspiration to take this picture. I wanted the viewer to feel as though they were laying in the grass with a loving puppy looking back at them.

Editing

The picture was crystal clear, the image was perfect, except for that annoying fence in the background. So I erased the fence and put in a nice field for the background with a tree brush I used while editing in GIMP. I enhanced the color a bit and added a pinch of contrast while adding my name to the bottom right hand corner.

In my camera bag

In my bag I have my two cameras, three fully charged batteries, three SD cards, a mini tripod, and a lens cleaning product. I usually need the cleaning product most when I take my storm chasing photography, or when the dog decides to lick the lens... that's always a lovely shot.

Feedback

My dog is very photogenic, she will look right at the camera lens as if she knows its time for a picture. Its odd, but frankly it makes things a lot easier. However, you don't need a photogenic dog to get a picture. All I can say is try to experiment with different camera angles and lighting, until you can find one that is a natural thing for your dog to enjoy and easy for you to capture.
