"Look! Up in the sky! It's a bird!! It's a plane! No! It's a sea turtle?" This is really a super shot. Voted.

Location
This image was shot at Kahe Point, aka Electric Beach on the west side of Oahu, Hawaii. I love underwater photography and each dive is unique in the fact that you never know what you are going to see.Time
The vast majority of my dives when I am home are in the morning. At the dive site by 7:30 and in the water by 8:00 or so. This shot was taken near the end of the dive so a little after 9:00 in the morning.Lighting
Electric Beach is a shallow dive site with a maximum depth of 35 feet which wreaked havoc with lighting with the sun moving in and out of the clouds that morning. The strobes provided great lighting on the turtle but i was shooting directly into the sun which created a significant amount of backscatter...illumination of all the particles in the water. This lighting didn't create a good color image so I blurred the background in post processing and converted to black and white. Not the way I planned it but even a blind squirrel finds an acorn now and again.Equipment
This was shot with a Nikon d7000 with a Tokina 10-17mm lens. The housing I use is made by Ikelite and I shoot with 2 160 watt strobesInspiration
Turtles are one of my favorite underwater subjects and the challenge is to try to capture some of their personality or what they might be thinking. It is rare that a turtle will continue to swim directly at me when they get within 10 feet or so. This one seemed determined for me to get out of his way.Editing
I started shooting in Raw 2 years ago and noticed a huge difference in my images. I load my images through Adobe Lightroom 5 and adjust for exposure and the color of the water. I finish off the images in Adobe Elements 11 adjusting for levels and colorcast issues if any.In my camera bag
Underwater housings are unique to each camera and my housing is made for the Nikon d7000. For underwater photography I assemble the camera in the housing before I leave the house and need to decide between wide angle and macro. My wide angle lens is a Tokina 10-17mm and for macro I use a Nikon 60mm.Feedback
Shallow dives, less than 50 feet, are best for shooting turtles, try to have the sun behind you and shoot up from below your subject. For color shots with strobes I suggest a shutter speed of 160 or 200 and play with aperture from f8 to f11 to get the color water you want.
