Behind The Lens

Location

This was shot in the tiny spare room of my apartment.

Time

It was about 9am when we started photographing; that's when the light was strongest coming through my little window.

Lighting

This shot was a mistake. I didn't even see the way the light was hitting her in this pose until I accidentally underexposed the shot when my flash didn't go off. Pure morning side light here!

Equipment

This was taken with a 5DMarkII and a 50mmF1.2L lens.

Inspiration

I was practicing posing and lighting with my friend trying to get a feel for how the process works, when I underexposed the shot to use my flash, then the flash never fired! I'm so thankful that it didn't though. This was the photo that helped me realized shadows are incredibly beautiful and they should be molded never eliminated.

Editing

To process I used Totally Rad's Rad Lab in Photoshop. The exact recipe I can't remember, but I'm sure I used "Skinny Jeans."

In my camera bag

In my bag, I have to have my Canon 70D, 24-70F2.8L lens, 430EXII Canon Speedlite, and pocketwizards!

Feedback

Honestly, at the time I had no idea how this happened. My gut told me it worked, so I kept the image. Listen to your gut. If you don't understand why you are drawn to a certain image, then really study it. That's how I learned the magic of using shadows instead of obsessively trying to eliminate them!
