Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Frick Park in Pittsburgh, Pa, right after my husband and I got back from our honeymoon!

Time

I took this photo in the late afternoon in the fall, when barely any sun could be seen in the woods on this overcast day.

Lighting

I wanted to take photos of our rings because as a photographer myself I noticed during my wedding day that was one detail that got overlooked by our own photographer. It was late in the day with the weather hindering the amount of light entering the woods, so I found a sign in an open pathway that gave just enough soft light to show off the textures of our rings!

Equipment

I used a Canon Rebel t3 with a 50mm portrait lens to add a softness to the background.

Inspiration

I was scurrying around in the park in the late afternoon, attempting to get shots of our rings before the sun completely dissipated. As I was walking on the trails I came to an opening that led to a field that provided just enough light for what I was looking for! At the bottom of the stairs was a wooden trail sign that served as a wonderful surface for these rings to sit on! I wanted to make sure that I captured photos of our wedding rings before life continued, and inevitably would never take them. The rings themselves symbolize such an incredible bond that I wanted to capture the power and importance of that symbolism in the photo.

Editing

Some basic leveling and color balance were implemented, along with making sure the contrast was at a proper level to separate the rings from their surroundings.

In my camera bag

My bag always includes a Canon Rebel t5i with kit lens, 50mm portrait lens, 70-200mm zoom lens, and an external flash.

Feedback

I'm more of an emotion based photographer first, and a technical photographer second, along with many other things down the line. I would say, don't think that you need the best of the best equipment to get you the results you're looking for. Sure, it can help, but if you are actively seeking beauty in this world and have an impulse to capture it with some sort of technology, you're ahead of the game! On the technical side, wait for your lighting, master your shutter speed, and always pay attention to your composition!
