I believe its a type of shield bug Because they are usually brightly coloured, they are also known as Jewel Bugs. These insects are plant suckers, closely related to stink bugs and may also produce offensive odours when disturbed.but I might be wrong.. Great Macro Louise .

Beats me - peculiar to Australia maybe? need Leon and Elyzabeth to roll in on this one - they're bug people - tho lizzie could very well be right - the colors fit a Jewel Bug, tho I've never seen one since I avoid bugs! great macro

This is a Glossy Shield bug (Cermatulus Nasalis). Also known from the family of true BUGS as a stink bug, due to the smell it gives off to warn off predators... this one is a juvenile, but it comes from Brisbane side of Australia and I don't know too much about them.

On one hand I wish I had bugs like this to photograph,
on the other hand I'm glad that they don't live in my garden :-)

It's a great shot and after a bit of research it looks like the nymph of the Hibiscus Harlequin bug. I know in the UK shield bugs are very definite shield shape when mature. The colours are beautiful.

At first I thought that it might be a Harlequin bug but now I'm not too sure. Good shot though. Brian
